Braai is Life
A Braai is much more than its rich history or cultural significance—it is defined foremost by the people who gather around it. At its core, a Braai is about community: the connections between friends and family, the fireside conversations, the sharing of jokes and stories, and the passing down of wisdom from one generation to the next.
This project seeks to capture these essential moments that make a Braai so unique. It will explore not only the social interactions but also the diversity of Braai traditions across South Africa. From the different ways a Braai is celebrated within various communities to the range of foods that adorn the grill, the project will highlight the rich tapestry of South African culture.
South Africa’s diversity extends beyond race and ethnicity—it is also deeply shaped by geography. This journey will document Braai culture from bustling cities to quiet villages, dusty towns to coastal paradises, and the bushveld’s quiet serenity. Traveling across the country, the project aims to portray the distinctive customs and rituals that define Braai culture in every part of this beautiful nation.
Through this exploration, the goal is to gain a deeper understanding and more authentic expression of Braai culture—showcasing the diversity of our people while celebrating the common threads that unite us all.
